FIRST
ENTRY in the AMIT DIARIES 22nd April
Dear Amit,
Well little sweetheart, the world has changed for you during the last month. On 6th April 2003,
you arrived in Israel with your new Mother (me!!) to be greeted by your new Dad and your new
sister Eden, age 5, after a journey lasting nearly 24 hours, including 3 car trips, 2 flights
and one 12 hour stay in a hotel. This was after an adoption process lasting 11 months which right
up to the last minute, we couldn’t be sure would succeed. But now, we have you here, and you have
been a member of our family for over 2 weeks, and it feels as though you have always been here.
First I will tell you a little bit about the background which led us to today, and then I will
describe how you have settled in.
Eden was born in March 1998, and Mom and Dad wanted another child...... so, in May 2002,
just after you were born in Kishinev in Moldova, though we didn’t know it at the time,
we decided to adopt. ......
.... The minute we saw your picture, Amit, we just fell in love with you. I was moved to tears.
.... you were just gorgeous, ....in November we visited you for the first time. I am not sure
if you could have sensed anything on that first visit, but for us it was very special. When I
held you for the very first time, it felt like you were my son and that you belonged with us,
and we knew that what we were doing was totally right. In that first visit, we were able to
hold you, feed you and play with you. .....
The children’s home was a state-run home for 200 children in central Kishinev. It was relatively
of high standard and the children were very well looked after. The regime was fairly strict
with clear schedules for meals and sleeping etc, but in general, you were provided with all
your needs. The medical treatment was basic but continual with several resident doctors.
Unfortunately the adoption process was long and bureaucratic, and even though I wanted to
visit you again in January, the Authorities would not let me.
So we had to be patient until March 2003, when we were summoned to the court hearing in which the
court judge in the Kishinev court of appeal would hear our application and officially rule on our
adoption. We came as a family on that visit, me, your Dad and Eden, and we had a lot of time to
spend with you. We played with you, fed you and enjoyed being with you.
.... On 2nd April 2003, I travelled to Kishinev for the third time, this time to finish all the
procedures and collect you and bring you home. …..
On the Sunday we arrived back in Israel, I took you with Eden to her kindergarten, and already started
to show you off to Eden’s friends and teachers. You smile at everyone and are very responsive,
though you do weigh up the situation very seriously before you decide how to react.
You talk in your own language which mainly consists of ta-ta-ta-ta and ba-ba-ba and
aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh and sometimes it seems as though you are singing.
You have the knack of being able to copy things so when we go shhhhhhhhhhhh you also
say shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, when I make a clicking noise, you make a clicking noise.
You wave your hand when we say shalom............
You have now met all the immediate family who think you are wonderful.
Eden adores you. She loves to feed you, help you, and do things for you. .....
We didn’t do too much for your first birthday (sorry!) but we will make a big party
once we have had the Brit Mila which I am sure none of us is looking forward to,
but I guess there is no choice but to get it over with.

Amit darling son, we hope you will be happy, healthy and have a wonderful family
life with your new parents and big sister, and large extended English and Israeli family.
We hope you will be a true friend to Eden and that you will succeed in every walk of life.
We will do our best to give you everything we can give you, as much love as we can possible
imagine, a warm home life, support, understanding and the values we live by.
We will give you the freedom to be who you want to be, and whatever else you need
to the greatest extent we can. We love you and are just totally delighted that you
are now such a sweet part of our family.
With Love,
Mum
